I believe that life is a beautiful gift, and that as educators, we shape the future of every student we come in contact with by showing them how to be fully engaged in their lives. We create space to allow their creativity to flourish and help them discover who they really are and glimpse who they might become.
I relish helping people use the tools of mindfulness to enrich their lives and the lives of those around them. I feel most alive when I am running, listening to the sounds of the world and the rhythm of my breath. It is the same quiet feeling one experiences when sitting on a deck with a warm cup of coffee at the start of a brand new day or playing a beautiful etude on stage in an empty recital hall.
I grew up in Rochester, MN and received a bachelor degree in Music Education at the University of Northern Iowa. I completed my student teaching in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Brisbane, Australia. I spent two more years teaching on the east coast of Queensland before coming back to the U.S. to get my Masters in Wind Conducting at the University of Colorado in Boulder under Allan McMurray. I left full-time teaching in Colorado in 2003 to focus on raising my children but continued to teach privately. We moved to Rochester, MN in 2008. While working at the Mayo Clinic’s Healthy Wellness Center, I was offered the opportunity to participte a 200-hour yoga certification program followed one year later with mindfulness training in Jon Kabat Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. I immediately started integrating mindfulness into my music instruction, recognizing the ease with which mindfulness tools can enhance music education, composition, and performance. I am passionate about helping fellow musicians be present in their music-making, whether they are singing, playing an instrument, teaching or conducting.
